FOOTPATH 3: begins at the railway crossing at
the point where bridleway 5 leaves the track. It
follows Middle Fen Drove past the end of River
Drove (footpath 4). After about 200m watch for
the waymark post on the left, where the footpath
descends from the track and heads north across
three meadows to join footpath 2 just west of
Webb's Hole Sluice. The tall hedgerows and old
pollarded willows, many in need of
re-pollarding, attract many small birds,
including little owl and long-tailed tit, and
summer visitors such as the willow warbler. The
meadows on both sides are covered with
buttercups in summer, preceded by the pale lilac
cuckoo lower in late spring. Snipe breed in the
wetter areas and may be heard 'drumming' as they
display over their territories. In winter when
the fields are flooded many kinds of wildfowl
may be seen, often in very large flocks.
