CRIMES & INCIDENT NUMBERS

At a recent Neigbourhood Watch meeting, we were asked to explain the difference between a crime number and an incident number.  I hope the explanation below clarifies this somewhat, but if you require further explanation, please let us know.

If you call into the police control room to report a crime or incident, you will be given an incident number.  If a crime has been committed, a report will be generated and you will consequently be given a crime number.

If a crime has been committed and you contact the Crime Management Unit in the first instance, you will not be given an incident number but will only be given a crime number.

Please keep a record of the numbers you are given because you may later require them.  If you make an insurance claim in relation to a crime you will be asked to quote your crime number by the insurance company.
