Swavesey Primary School Report

For many years we have experienced great difficulty in obtaining support staff, particularly midday supervisors, cleaners and a relief school crossing patrol officer. During recent weeks the situation has worsened. At present we have vacancies for all of these positions. We are covering lunchtimes with one midday supervisor short and Mrs Barker is only covering the road crossing at the end of the school day. As you will appreciate the individuals who fill these positions are vital to the smooth running of the school and the safety of the children. If you feel that you could help out in any way or know someone else who could please let us know.

Thank you for your continued support in collecting vouchers for the school. With our small number of Tetley vouchers we have just taken delivery of some balls for short Tennis and some relay batons. The Tesco 2001 token scheme is under way. We tend to do very well by way of computer equipment from this scheme - please give it your usual, much appreciated support. For those who prefer to do their shopping at Sainsburys, we have some forms for you - or any of your relations - to register Swavesey Primary as your nominated school. We then benefit automatically every time you shop at Sainsburys.

Other promotions we collect vouchers for are the Walkers/News of the World Free Books for Schools vouchers, Time Computers Free Software for Schools scheme, Nestle's Box Tops for Education and PC Worlds ink cartridge scheme. We are also looking at Vitalite's Schools at.Play fun equipment scheme. If anyone is a regular Vitalite user, let us know and we will let you have a pad to stick the special labels on.

The next PTA event is the Easter Fayre on Saturday 31st March. Do come along to support the school as this is our biggest fundraising event of the year. You'll have lots of fun and may pick up a bargain on the toys and games, or book stalls. Also Family Day will be on Sunday 20th May.

Lastly, congratulations to the children in the choir who sang at Homerton College last month. Many thanks to Miss Davey for organising the event.

 SWAVESEY SEA SCOUTS

A big thank you to all those who supported our January Sale. We are pleased to report that over £500 was raised. This could not have been done without the help of so many people in the village, and we really are grateful to each and every one of you, who either gave us things to sell, or who came and bought things on the day. The money is of course going towards the rebuilding project.

Looking ahead to next year, we are hoping to repeat the January Sale, so watch this space for details in a few months!

SWAVESEY PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP

Tell the world to stop! A year goes by so quickly, and here we are already in the summer term. We have welcomed 15 new families to Playgroup since Christmas, and to accommodate the rising number of children in our village we are, for the first time, able to offer an afternoon pre-school session from Easter. This will alleviate the pressure for places in the mornings and give us the opportunity to hold sessions specifically designed for the children starting school in September.

We were therefore thrilled to receive Planning Permission for our new building, which will be sited near to the Library. We are now applying for grants and have opened our new Building Fund. We have a wealth of plans for ways to meet the needs of the children and their families in Swavesey. We shall also need to raise a fair sum of money, and are looking for people with skills to join the Building Project Team. If you want to provide the best services for your children, now is the time to get involved. Come along to our Open Morning on the 19th May, see the architect's plans, meet the staff and other parents, and let us show you what we have to offer.

Children can start at Playgroup from 2 years 10 months, and we operate an Admissions Book so you can register your child now to join us when you are ready. We will then keep in touch and help you prepare for the "big day".

You can find us in the Youth Centre at the Village College. It may not be the most attractive of buildings, but we do offer a very good Playgroup within its doors. Come and see for yourself. We look forward to meeting you. If you have any queries, please phone our Supervisor Cathy Dennis on Swavesey 203039.

SWAVESEY & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY

TUESDAY 16TH JANUARY AT THE VILLAGE COLLEGE
Veronica Bennett gave a talk on the East Anglian properties of the National Trust. She illustrated with slides many of the great houses and coastlines in Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire to be visited. These included not only some favourites but also some lesser known ones.

Mrs Carole Shaw thanked the speaker for a very enjoyable talk. The meeting closed at 9 p.m.
