Community Car Service I have been approached by the Surgery to help in identifying how a Community Car Service could be put together to help with the problems that many of our elderly are having when they need to visit the Doctor for an appointment, treatment or just to collect medication. My immediate thoughts are a number of volunteers with time and a car; also a co-ordinator to identify available volunteers would be needed.
I
am at the present time trying to identify those authorities
who are willing to make grants available to such a scheme as I
have in mind. I perceive at the moment no charge being made
for transport but a donation would be made by the client being
transported. In the meantime may I ask if there are members of
the Community who would help to get the scheme launched. It is NOT intended that the Doctor will cease visits, nor the Community Nurse. Please telephone or write to me if you are interested and have any thoughts which will help to proceed with this initiative. Please Telephone: 01954 232428 or 01954 231623 or write to:

Letter To Editor Dear Reader, I am writing this letter out of my personal sadness and out of concern for pedestrians, cyclists and animal owners. On Saturday February 16 th at 8.00am my much loved dog, Barney, was killed instantly at the Gibraltar Lane, Middle Watch junction, by a car travelling out of the village at a speed exceeding 40 mph. The impact was so great that he as thrown onto the grass verge. The vehicle made no attempt to slow down, nor did the driver have the decency to stop and help me. I was devastated and shocked, now I also feel great anger. If the vehicle had been travel-ling within the speed limit, Barney would have stood a chance. I am only too well aware that he was running out across the road, but it could have been a child, the result would have been the same. Animals and children are unpredictable. Living near that junction and the busy shop area, we have long noticed vehicles pass-ing at speeds in excess of 50 mph. It has been a while since someone was knocked down in Swavesey, but it is an accident waiting to happen. Just because Swavesey is a long straight road, it does not mean that it can be driven on as an open road, there are people living beside it. Remember that when you next drive out. Please slow down, this is our village, look after it and those in it. Sarah Hellon |
