Royal British Legion

The Swavesey & District RBL Annual Dinner dance took place on Saturday 26th January. Good food, excellent company and a band in the perfect mode made this a very successful evening. Tony Pepper and his wife were our guests. Tony is the RBL County Field Officer and his presentation to Pip Gill of a medal and certificate for his 40 years of collecting for the Poppy Appeal, gave the evening a sense of occasion. Later in the evening the arrival of Max
Miller (Bill Smart) was a surprise but all agreed that Bill has missed his vocation. A collection for the Max Miller Statue Fund raised £33.72.

Swavesey Institute Football Club - JAN/FEB 02

First Team

Phil Baines’s side continued to perform inconsistently in the league, but have maintained their
position just below halfway in Division 1B. The team is looking to consolidate it’s Division
1 status during the remainder of the season after last year’s successful promotion campaign.
Despite losing out in the latter stages of the Junior Invitation Cup, outstanding performances
in the Creake Shield have seen them through to the semi-finals.
Latest results:
v. Haddenham (H) (Cup) Lost 2-3 (Land, Stokes)
v. Romsey Mill (A) (Cup) Won 2-1 (Blake(2))
v. Over Sports Res (A) Lost 0-2
v. Stretham Hotspurs (H) Won 3-2 (Little(2), Till)
v. Soham Utd Res (H) Lost 2-3 (Till, Little)

Reserves
After cruising through the latter part of 2001, the Reserves started to stutter in the New Year.
Despite defeats against their main promotion rivals Mark Lewin’s side enter the last third of
the season in second place in the league with a game in hand over the teams below them.
Maximum points from their remaining fixtures will guarantee promotion to Division 4B.
Latest results:
v. Littleport Town ‘A’ (A) Lost 1-3 (Pettingel)
v. Huntingdon Town ‘A’ (A) Won 3-1 (Carless(2), Pettingel)
v. Bluntisham ‘A’ (H) Lost 3-4 (Oldham, Coulson, Lewin)
v. Sutton Utd Res (H) Won 4-1 (Harrower, Hyusein(3))

Veterans
An improved performance from the “Over 35s” saw them narrowly lose their only game in
2002 to date, 0-2, against Cambridge Veterans.

Swavesey & District History Society

The meeting held on February 19th in the Swavesey Village College was well attended. Mrs Honor Ridout talked about the Stourbridge Fair in Cambridge which was held every September for a month spanning seven centuries closing in 1933.

Mrs Ridout talked mainly about the 18th century. This important fair was held in Garlic Row off the Newmarket Rd. Booths were built to house the many wares to be sold such as items made of pewter and china
materials. There would be a Horse Fair and other attractions. People came from all over the country to attend. Together with slides showing the dress and travel of these times, also advertisements in old newspapers, the speaker was able to give a real insight of the fair at this time.

After question time Mrs Carole Shaw thanked Mrs Ridout for a very interesting talk.

Library News

During the months of December and January Swavesey Library has been delighted to host an exhibition of photographs displayed by Swavesey Camera Club. Our visitors were very impressed by their superb and interesting pictures. If anyone would like any information on the club’s activities, why not pop into the library where their itinerary is displayed?

For those of you who don’t already know, the Cambridgeshire Library Service is in a serious financial position. Whilst the Service has been very successful in obtaining grants for various projects, the budget for the last 12 years has remained the same, ignoring the population explosion in Cambridgeshire and causing severe problems. Fortunately for
Swavesey, because it is a “single-staffed” library, possible closures will be minimal; the larger libraries are the most affected.

On a more optimistic note:-
Coming soon are the People’s Network* and a long awaited photocopier!

Swavesey Library is open for:-
Books, Internet, CD Rom Player, Adult and Junior Videos, Fax, Book Sales. We also provide a doorstep delivery for the housebound.

Opening Times:-
Tuesday + Wednesday 6.00 pm – 8.00pm
Thursday + Friday 2.30 pm – 5.00pm
Saturday 10.00 am – 12 noon

* The People’s Network
This is a national project intended to make the Internet available to all. It is part of the Governments commitment to give everyone in the UK the opportunity to get on line. It involves funding for many additional computers in all public libraries throughout the country and will also provide faster Internet connections for these libraries.Cambridgeshire libraries received a grant of just over £1 million to deliver the People’s Network
