 SWAVESEY & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY

Tuesday, 20th January, at S V C

The first meeting of 2004 saw a large attendance of members welcoming back a favourite speaker in Sue Oosthuizen who on this occasion brought to life " A late 14 Century Manor House" The house chosen once stood where the present Manor House at Great Eversden is now.

In 1397 the then owner, Sir William Castleacre, had somehow offended the King who promptly confiscated his home and contents.

Following an explanation of the layout and use of a typical Manor House of the time Mrs Oosthuizen turned to the inventory taken at the time of the confiscation, a copy of which was distributed to each member. Making an assumption that Castleacre had sat down and gone from room to room and then to the outbuildings in working out their contents and value, the inventory totalled some £340, two thirds of which was in grain. Mrs Oosthuizen followed the same pattern and gave a lively and amusing account of the remaining contents. Albeit with many names differing from today, many of the items were similar in nature, if somewhat cruder, to those we might have in our homes today, although it would be hard to find "2 swords worth 13s.4d",a "pollex worth 3s.4d","9 bows? 10 shef de arwes worth 21s", "2 speres worth 3s.4d" together with various pieces of armour!

With members comments and questions answered throughout the evening, Mrs Carole Shaw thanked Mrs Oosthuizen for yet another interesting talk.

First Team (Sponsored by Swavesey Post Office and Newsagents)
Currently in second place in the Junior 1B with games in hand, a move to Senior B and the 1B championship can be secured by taking all of the remaining points available.  Swavesey have qualified for the Junior Challenge Cup Final where they will face Parson Drove 92 at 1930 on 15 Apr at Cambridge City FC, Milton Road, Cambridge.  Depending on the outcome of a semi-final on 20 Mar (away to Saffron Crocus), they could return to the same venue exactly one week later to try and retain the Creake Shield they won last season.  The support of as many villagers as possible at the cup final(s) would be greatly appreciated.

The Reserves, in last place, are struggling to retain their Junior 4B status.  Despite some solid displays, the performances have not been translated into points.  A rare brace from "daddy" Mick Stokes secured the first point of 2004, this was followed by a further goal the following week.

Haddenham Reserves        Lost 0-4

Fixtures
Home games are played each Saturday on The Green and kick off at 3pm.  Please come and support the village sides, fixtures are in the Cambridge Evening News each Friday, and then join the players in The White Horse afterwards.  Midweek fixtures will also appear in the News.

Veterans (Sponsored by The White Horse)
The Over 35s fixtures in 2004 have all been postponed.  Weekly training is now taking place on Thursdays, more details from Jerry Ladell on 201018.

General
Apologies to villagers for the lack of home fixtures in January.  With three Swavesey Institute teams and the numerous youth sides representing Swavesey Spartans it was felt that the pitch was not in a good enough condition to host games and be fit for the rest of the reason.  A decision was taken, for the second year in the past three, to postpone all fixtures planned for The Green for one month to protect the pitch and ensure that all teams could fulfil their commitments over the course of the season.

Sponsorship
Any potential sponsors should ring Jim Foster on 232842 to discuss ideas.

Referees
Cambridgeshire Football Association is always on the look out for both male and female referees of all ages.  If you are interested in becoming a qualified referee please contact Richard Nichols on 01223 576770 Ext 202.

JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG

On Saturday 20th February anyone doing their weekend shopping in St Ives might have noticed several large posters and increased activity in the Free Church Hall. Those lucky enough to have let their curiosity lead them inside would have found something very special. This was the annual Interprint Competition presented by St Ives Photographic Club.

No, this isn't a plug for a rival club. Amongst a total of 240 wonderful photographs from 30 different clubs you would have found the entry from Swavesey Camera Club.

Though we are a small, friendly village club that does not mean we are restricted to our own tiny circle. We are part of a much greater whole, are involved in many inter-club activities and affiliated with the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies. Just recently Swavesey hosted a 3-way competition with St Ives and Gamlingay, a very close thing with us in the middle place. On another evening we viewed the EAF Portfolio, prints and slides from local clubs selected for inclusion in their annual exhibition. These included a delightful picture of laughing children looking through a link-wire fence, taken by our own Bill Law.

So once again we have whatever you want, anything from a sociable evening at the college with close friends to challenging contact with some of the finest photographers in East Anglia, it is up to you.
