Swavesey Spartans Football Club

Another successful season was concluded with Spartans Day on Sunday 16 June. Despite being nicely timed to coincide with Fathers Day, many fathers were disappointed, as they were still expected to do a lot of running around!

A terrific attendance saw some excellent five a side football matches, with all ages between under 7 to under 16 represented. Cambridge United players Graham Rush & Dave Bridges (one of whom is a former Spartan) presented the trophies on the day.

A special presentation was made to our Secretary, Roger Luddington, for all his hard work and dedication to Swavesey Spartans.

Congratulations to our Under 16 team and their Manager, Gary Wimbleton, who came runners-up in their division this year.

As a Club we were also proud to be awarded `CLUB OF THE YEAR` from the Colts League Committee. The award recognises amongst other things the overall good sportsmanship marks we received from other clubs.

Our Honorary Life President, John Thornton, also received an award from Colts for having the joint highest refereeing marks during the season - well done John.

All in all we have had a very good year, bring on next season!

Chairman

SWAVESEY INSTITUTE FOOTBALL CLUB

First Team
Victories in the final two league games of the season saw Phil Baines's side secure a fourth place finish in their inaugural Division 1B campaign, following last season's promotion. The annual awards went to Danny Wolfe, Player's Player of the Year, Rob Pilsworth, Manager's Player of the Year, and Damien Blake, Leading Goalscorer. The club's Young Player of the Year was Kevin Brittain, and Most Improved Player Chris Little, with old campaigner Mick Stokes claiming the Chairman's Merit Award.
Final two league results:-
v. Buckden (H) Won 4-0 (Williams, Little, Brittain, Land)
v. Romsey Mill (H) Won 2-0 (Williams, Blake)
Cottenham Cup
v. Waterbeach Lost 0-3
v. Haddenham Won 3-1 (Edwards, Blake, Adebola)

Reserves
A lacklustre final performance of the season, a 0-6 defeat at Pymore, meant that Mark Lewin's side remained in second place in Division 5B, and although promotion to Division 4B had already been guaranteed, any lingering championship chances were dashed. Dean Pettingel scooped both the Player's Player of the Year and Leading Goalscorer awards. Neil Jordison was the Manager's Player of the Year.

Veterans
Despite failing to register a victory the "Over 35s" had an enjoyable first season with a number of friendlies. The Player of the Year Award went to Doug Langley.
Results:-
v. Godmanchester (H) Lost 1-3
v. Over (H) Lost 0-1
v. Swavesey Reserves (H) Lost 3-6.

Social
The 2001/02 Awards Dinner at Wood Green on a warm June evening was supported by both players and sponsors. Thanks to all who attended. Forthcoming social events will be advertised widely within the village, please look out for the adverts. The events are aimed at all villagers and not exclusively the footballers. Your support for events is always welcome and very much appreciated.

Sponsorship
Many thanks to all the 2001/02 club sponsors. The sponsorship is used to support the running of the club's three teams and to increase the club's development fund which will be used to invest in the future of football at all levels in Swavesey. Potential sponsors should contact Jim Foster on 232842 to discuss how they can help the club.

2002/03 Season
Training for the 2002/03 season has started and continues each Tuesday and Thursday on Swavesey Green. The first team will continue in Division 1B next season with the Reserves now in Division 4B. The Veterans will again play a series of friendlies. New players should contact Phil Baines on 200377 in the first instance.
