RADSOC
We at Swavesey Radsoc have been very busy since our last very successful production, “Habeas Corpus” by Alan Bennett. We have recently held auditions and cast our pantomime which will be “Sleeping Beauty”, to be performed 20th, 21st and 22nd January 2005. This ever popular story has a fast moving script – written by Leonard Caddy, and contains all the usual groaners, oh yes it has, with a couple of baddies, the evil Fairy Nightshade and the wicked witch queen Mother Blackheart, and to try and foil them and save the Princess Beauty, the inept wizard Wombosa and a Fairy Queen. We also have a magnificent Dame (Queen Maria) and a good pair of legs (Prince Florizel).
Over the past couple of years Radsoc has been lucky enough to attract quite a number of youngsters to our group and this year, director Alan Hewitt, has cast a number of them in major roles. This is not to say that we don’t have older members, we do, our age group ranges from 12 to over 60 years. Although we have cast this production don’t let this stop you from joining our group, we always need lots of people to help with things like costume, props, make-up, set making and painting, lighting, front of house or even playing a musical instrument (one our members plays the didgeridoo!). In fact if you have never been on stage before working behind the scenes is a good way to start. One has the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills in a drama group or take up old ones. Anyway, where else for £8 a year can you splash paint around, make a lot of rude noises, and fuse the lights!
If you are interested in joining us contact our secretary Janet Maguire on 01954 230871 or come along to our rehearsals (Monday & Thursdays in Swavesey Village College) which start on 6th September.
WANTED
We are gradually building up our costumes again, which is a rather costly business and need unwanted evening wear (mens & ladies), long skirts, mens shirts, wigs, leotards, dance shoes (ballet & other), old jewellery, old curtains, material, trimmings– in fact anything that might be suitable for adapting or making into various costumes. Please contact Janet at the above telephone number.

Swavesey
Institute Football Club -March/April 2004
First Team (Sponsored by Swavesey Post Office and Newsagents)
A lacklustre cup final performance and the concession of 3 penalties in their penultimate league game meant that no trophies came the way of the first team in 2003/04. A resounding win by a five goal margin in their final league game, having been two down after 30 minutes, and in doing so silencing the "Baines Out" chants, secured promotion from Division 1B to Senior B. The first team ended as runners up in all 3 Cambridgeshire FA competitions they entered this season. Phil Baines will again manage the first team in
2004/05. Results
Parsons Grove 92 Lost 0-2 Ely Crusaders Lost 2-3 (Osbourne, M Blake) St Ives Rangers Won 7-2 (M Blake, Osbourne, Brittain, T Land(2), James, D Blake)
Reserves (Sponsored by The White Horse)
Eddie Andrews' side played their "get out
of jail free" card on the final day of the season beating the league
champions to maintain Division 4B status by one point. Despite a fatal defensive
error by veteran Mick Stokes, and penalties "bottled" by the
experienced duo of Shaun Land and Joe Warrington they managed to beat West Row
Gunners 3-1. Stokes and Land at least went some way to make up for the
shoddiness in other parts of their game by scoring the vital goals. "Bonesy" Aldhouse has retired from first team football and has been appointed Reserve Team Player/Manager for 2004/05. Has "Deadly" Jim Foster got this appointment right or will we see another winter of discontent? The club would like to thank Eddie Andrews for his hard work with the Reserves recently.
Results Barton Mills Reserves Lost 1-3 (Stokes) West Row Gunners Reserves Won 3-1 (S Land(2), Stokes)
2003/04 Awards
The first team individual trophies went to Steve Till (Player's Player), Kevin Brittain (Manager's Player) and Damien Blake (Leading Goalscorer). The winners from the Reserves were Mick Stokes (Player's Player), Colin Doggett (Manager's Player) and Shaun Land (Leading Goalscorer). The Club Young Player of the Year was Michael Blake.
2004/05 Season
Training started at the end of June. It is still not too late to join the club and register for the 2004/05 season. If you are interested or need more information on the club from playing perspective contact Phil Baines on 200377. The 2004/05 Senior B season starts on 17 August with the Division 4B season kicking off on 28 August. Check the Swavesey fixtures in the Cambridge Evening News and come and support your village side. Saturday fixtures start at 3pm.
Cambrigeshire FA Awards
Two Swavesey residents were honoured by Cambridgeshire FA at their 2004 Annual General Meeting. Phil Baines received a long service medal in recognition of 20 years service to football in Cambridgeshire. Neil Jordison received the Tony Sumner Memorial Award for the level seven referee with the highest average club mark in Cambridgeshire during 2003/04 with an average mark of 7.94 out of 10.
Sponsorship
Any potential 2004/05 sponsors should ring Jim Foster on 232842 to discuss ideas.

WELCOME EVENING
After the long summer break we all look forward to the first meeting of Swavesey Camera Club. This year our Programme starts on Thursday 9th September, when we will hold our annual 'Welcome Evening', inviting all those who might like to join the club to come along for light refreshments and meet all the members. Many of you considering joining our club might already be proficient photographers, others might be more hesitant, doubting their own skills and wondering how their work compares with that of the average club member. With this in mind, several of us, (some more experienced, others less so), will be taking turns to show a small sample of our own work, which we hope will interest and entertain you, and encourage you to join our very friendly little club.

SWAVESEY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
Have you ever
wondered what the Women’s Institute do? We have talks on many subjects : for
example Body Language, Visitors to Cambridge, Ouse Valley Walks, Bygones, The
Nuremberg Trials, English Sayings and Superstitions and also many Arts and
Crafts. It is not all about Cakes and Jerusalem these days. Didn’t you see the film
Calendar Girls? Recently we had an open coffee evening in the gardens of one of
our members. It was a very relaxing way to spend an evening with friends and a
pleasant way to raise funds needed for the club. One of our members won a
competition with the Cambridgeshire Branch of Goldwings Owners Club charity
which held the competition for donations to Dreamflights. The prize, a
motorbike ride on one of their wonderful motorcycles, specially adapted to take
disabled passengers safely. We have trips to Cromer, The July Races, Leonardslee
Gardens, the East of England and Fenland Fair. The members get a chance to
experience scuba diving, gliding, fencing, croquet and many more unusual
activities. The National Federation also has a residential/day college for
learning all types of skills at Denman in Oxfordshire which is open to both
members and non-members. We have a seperate walking club and eating out club
which can be specially enjoyable for those who live alone. So go on give it a
try, come along to visit our club and you will be made most welcome. Pat Hayden
