STOP PRESS: "YOUR LIBRARY TO OPEN ON SATURDAY MORNINGS"
Your Library is now well established at Swavesey Village College, run by volunteers and is providing books and online access for all. We do need more library members, more supporters and more volunteers, to ensure that we meet the criteria for continued existence set by the Cambridgeshire Library service. To this end we propose to write to a number of leading citizens over the next few months, asking them to support this village facility in whatever way they can. In addition arrangements are now at an advanced stage for Your Library to open between 10am and 12noon on the first Saturday of every month. The first Saturday opening being 4th September 2004. This is just one of a number of developments coming along to Your Library in the next few months.
During the school summer holidays we will be participating in the Cambridgeshire Library service summer children's reading challenge. "The Reading Rollercoaster". Each child who joins will be issued with a collector's folder. As they read books during the summer, they will collect sheets of stickers. Each sheet relates to a section of the Reading Rollercoaster on the collector folder. To complete their own Reading Rollercoaster, children can fill in the gaps on the 22 folder with different sections of track from each sticker sheet. These are loops, a tunnel and a water slide. They also have different rollercoaster cars to add to the track and lots of weird and wonderful characters to stick to the background. There is space on the reverse for children to record their thoughts on the books they have read. The Reading Rollercoaster rolls through some amazing landscapes, suggesting reading genres and themes for children to explore on their way through the challenge. These include space, planets and aliens, haunted houses, pirates and explores, knights and castles, fantasy lands and funfair. The bright, lively artwork will ensure that it appeals to children of all ages. Children may choose books from any section of the children's part of Your Library. There is no set book list. All children who read 6 books during the summer will receive a certificate and a medal at special presentation ceremonies. These schemes have been held each summer over the last few years and have proved to be very successful, so pop along and register your child now.
Requests for Children's and Adult nonfiction books are now totally free - just ask a member of staff if you wish to order. Additional shelving and book stock will be added over the summer to enhance your book selection.
