Primary School News Items
The new headteacher at the primary school, David Major, took up his post at the start of term. Having previously taught in schools in Oxfordshire and Berkshire, David was also a headteacher for seven years in Bracknell. He is an Ofsted inspector and has recently worked in schools in Special Measures in the county. After six weeks, David has taken time to assess his new role. 'I am delighted to be working in such a friendly, high-achieving village school. There is tremendous learning ethos and I have noticed a very strong sense of community, both within the school and the village. The children are very well motivated, parents highly supportive and the teaching team work together extremely well. It was no surprise when Ofsted gave the school an outstanding report this summer. The staff and governors are committed to continuing to improve the school and I am looking forward to seeing it develop further in the next few years.' David has recently moved into a new home in Cambridge. He enjoys many interests including walking, reading, live music and general knowledge quizzes. He loves most sports especially cricket, and likes to join the Barmy Army supporting England abroad. Swavesey Primary School recently held a special Harvest Assembly. Children and parents collected food, items of clothing and toiletries for homeless people and these were given to Jimmy's Night Shelter in Cambridge. Reverend Yule led the assembly. Two days later Miss Davey's class assembly also followed the harvest theme and focused on food from around the world. The School's PTA has completed another highly successful year. It raised several thousand pounds from a full calendar of social and fund-raising events. Particular thanks are due to retiring committee officers Jackie Langley (Chair); Debbie Sweeney (Vice-Chair); Mandy Meechan (Secretary) and Jane Lintorn (Treasurer). The main donations to the school were £2000 towards the computer suite; £2000 for an interactive whiteboard; £1000 for play area improvements; £1000 for a new storage shed; £400 play & £400 sports equipment: and £220 for dictionaries for Year 6 leavers. The new committee (chaired by Alison Turian) begins its programme of events with the annual Fireworks Evening on Friday 1st November. |
