 SWAVESEY & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY

Tuesday September 16th at the S.V.C

An excellent attendance of members at the first meeting after the summer break was rewarded with a delightful and interesting talk about the "Tudor Recreation Days" at Kentwell Manor House in Suffolk. Honor Ridout explained how all those taking part involved themselves and took on the Tudor ways for the particular year they were enacting. Some were actors but most were people who had replied to advertisements and wished to take part. These days were originally started with children's education in mind but were extended to include everyone. Slides showed Kentwell Manor to be a beautiful building with a moat and large grounds where, on these days, would be found Basket makers, Candle makers, Archers, Cottagers and many others. In the Manor cooking, sewing, writing and other activities take place.

Finally Mrs Ridout showed and modelled the dress and headgear she would wear and encouraged members to try on various caps and hats in Tudor fashion.

Mrs Carole Shaw thanked her for a very interesting evening and the meeting closed at 9.30 pm

Swavesey Institute Football Club -Nov/Dec 2003

First Team (Sponsored by Swavesey Post Office and Newsagents)

Spurs fan Phil Baines has scrapped his "Hoddleseque" managerial style and guided the first team to the top of Division 1B at the end of October; the side also remaining in both county cup competitions.  Martin Williams' goal drought has meant that Damien Blake has shouldered more scoring responsibility, even veteran Steve Gawthrop has netted twice in his fortieth year.

Results
Waterbeach  Reserves                        Won 2-0 (D Blake, James)
Bottisham Sports                               Won 3-0 (James, D Blake, Gawthrop)

Reserves (Sponsored by The White Horse)

A patchy start for Eddie Andrews' charges in Division 4B, although they remain in the cup.  The side is looking more solid than last season with former first teamers Mick Stokes and Shaun Land adding sturdiness, albeit at the expense of pace, to the team.

 SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

We have always maintained that our Club is much more than just about taking pictures, an interest in photography can include just about anything such as the study of wildlife, world travel and sports. For example this session's lectures have given us an insight into the difficult and often dangerous work of a Police Wildlife Officer and shown us the great effort necessary to provide schools and hospitals for the remote mountainous regions of Nepal. As a bonus we were able to help by purchasing attractive items from an unusual selection of Nepalese jewellery, scarves and shawls being sold to raise the necessary funds.

Any individual, or member of a group with a special interest would be more than welcome on evenings relating to that subject so please check in the magazine for anything you would not like to miss.

This is not to say that the main object of the meetings is being obscured, there are always plenty of memorable photographs. One evening we saw the work of Fenland Studios from March, delightfully relaxed family portraits and the latest style of wedding albums, a very far cry from those stilted, boring, stiffly-posed efforts of only a few years ago.

Lastly, the Club was delighted to be profiled by Photographic Monthly in their October issue, especially as they gave us an excellent review and published seven fine photographs taken by some of our members. We are hoping to maintain this connection and they have promised to come to talk to us in the near future.
