Promoting A Healthier Lifestyle

You will have seen much in the media about the Government promoting a healthier lifestyle for our youngsters. In the coming months we will become part of the Health Promoting Schools Initiative.

Many Cambridgeshire schools are already part of this programme, which will fit in with some of our different topics. The school will identify two or more priority areas, drawing up action plans to promote understanding. We will consult with children and parents as part of these programmes.

We have also opted to take part in the new national Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. All parents of our younger children should have received details in a separate letter.

We also wish to use next week's launch of the scheme to further discourage children eating sweets in school. Many children like to share sweets or cakes at the end of the day on their birthdays. This 'tradition' is a generous gesture, but it excludes those with food allergies and others who do not eat sweets. In a move which is likely to win us few friends we are calling a halt to the birthday sweet bonanza from today. We hope parents will understand and support our motives for this decision.

In Literacy, Year 6 pupils have been writing some poems to convey the contrasting moods of peace and war:

Peace is ...
A bumble bee humming in the breeze
A newly born calf
The sun burning like a big bronze ball
Water drops falling on a still lake War
War is ...
A tiger pouncing on its prey
A raven flying in a dark sky
Thunder striking the ground
Dirty like a deep dark trench
Peace is what I prefer. Do you?
Simon Tabram

Peace is a calm lake
War is a stormy sea
Peace is a bird singing away
War is a dragon burning the innocent
War is like an elephant
Huge and rampaging around
Peace is a clear glass
All shiny and smooth
War is an explosion, evil and sad
Peace is clean, and never mean
Elliot Reed

Peace is a beautiful snowflake falling
Over a mountain covered in snow
War is an earthquake
Shattering anything that gets in its way
Peace is a fish gliding through a clear stream
War is a bomb being dropped
Which would you pick Peace or War?
I would choose peace
Eleanor Morgan

War is like an icicle
Stabbing at every step
War is like a blood red fire
Forever burning
Peace is like a golden leaf
Gently floating from an apple tree
As the breath of a summer wind blows
Doves fly out to find their food
War is dark, dull and grey
Peace is relaxing, calm and smooth
Charlotte Oldham

Newsletter December / January

The College was delighted to be able to celebrate the record results of our students at the Annual Presentation Evening on Monday 8th November. A large number of our former students returned to receive their certificates and prizes from our guest speaker, Colin Touchin, a freelance Conductor and Composer.

Other highlights this term have included :
A record number of students took part in and completed the College's annual 12 mile sponsored walk in October, with fundraising fast approaching the £10,000. Whilst most of this money goes towards targeted projects, including a new minibus, 10% will be added to money raised at our forthcoming Charities Morning on the last day of term.

The Geography trip to the Alps and the History trip to New York at half term were very popular, most enjoyable and extremely valuable.

Year 10 and 11 drama students took part in the Schools Shakespeare Project, performing an abridged version of Hamlet at the Bedford Corn Exchange.

There has been a significant increase in the number of after school activities and the number of students participating in a wide range of sporting, arts and enrichment clubs. In sport, one of the highlights was that the College's under 16 Boys' Hockey Team retained their district title.

Addenbrookes NHS trust hosted a Healthcare Science Week event at the College on 19th November, involving exhibitions and a variety of hands-on activities.

In November the College launched its Family Health and Fitness Course which is a 10 week course involving students with their parent(s) looking at a whole range of personal health and fitness issues.

Forthcoming events include:

At 6pm on December 7th the College hosts the first of this year's Community Lectures : a talk about the 'Star Chaser Rocket' Project. We warmly welcome members of the general public to come along to the Lecture and to have a chance to see the rocket firsthand.

The College's Christmas Concert takes place at the Parish Church on 8th December, with a wide selection of musical items from the College's various choral and instrumental groups.

On 15th December, Year 9 students have their annual Insight into Industry Day, in which they work on a range of problem solving activities lead by a number of our science and business partners.

Year 7 are going to be putting together Christmas hampers for the elderly residents of Thistle Green.  Each form will be responsible for one hamper and it is hoped that at the beginning of December representatives from each form will go out to make the presentation and sing some carols with the residents.
