Opening of our Library & Music Room

On Monday 10th October the grand opening of the library and music room took place. We all stood in the Quiet Area. As Mrs. Nuttall opened the room an excellent fanfare was played by Harry Clarke and Alex Blake. Mrs. Nuttall said that she had always wanted a library when she taught at the school and now she's got one! All of us are happy too.

We went into the library to borrow a book for the first time this Tuesday. Harry took 'Molly Moon saves the World' and Annabel borrowed 'Lemony Snickett'. They are both brilliant! Suzanne is yet to have her turn with the Y4 children. We love to read and we love the new library. We especially like the new rug that says ' Get carried away ... by a book' We think that we all have been already!

On Our Fantastic New Playground

The new playground has been a BIG HIT in its first week. A few children put down some thoughts on paper:

The new park is fun! It is much more fun than the other park. I love it! It has monkey bars, swings, a slide and lots more things. It has a big girls and boys bit and a little girls and boys bit! See if YOU like it when you can!
Emma Pearce (Year 2)

I have just moved home to Swavesey. I think that the big new park is wonderful. It is exciting playing on some of the equipment. I like the big blue climbing frame, with the shady green seats underneath, the best of all.
Joey Dunn (Year 5)

It's lovely and shiny. It's brand new. I like the monkey bars best but James doesn't. He was the first to fall off the monkey bars.
Thea Handy (Year 2)

The new playground is a great place to be after school.
It's great fun and I like it because it is exciting. As well as the bars and slides it has a place where you can sit, and a special playground for smaller children.

Chair of Governors retires after 20 years of service to the College

Ed Coe has retired as Chair of Governors after 8 years. He became Chairman at the start of a period of significant change and uncertainty; this included growth from 6 to 8 form entry and the associated building projects, the retirement of Pat Talbot after 17 years and the College’s application to become a Specialist Science College. Ed will retire completely from the Governing Body at the end of December, bringing to an end over 20 years of service. During this time, the College has changed and improved beyond recognition which can be largely attributed to the vision and commitment of Governors like Ed. At the Governors’ Meeting, Mike Fox was unanimously elected as the new Chair of Governors, with Lynn Tranter continuing as Vice Chair.

During the past term, the College has hosted two very important community events:

  • A celebration of the College’s first two years as a Specialist Science College. The event was attended by representatives of the many companies or organisations who have supported the College and this was our opportunity to recognise and thank them for this.
  • The launch of the College’s Community Arts Development. The event provided a taste of some of the talent that exists within and beyond the College and demonstrated the potential that this new venture has in bringing together and developing the arts across our patch. The event also launched ‘Arts News Swavesey and Area’, a termly arts newsletter celebrating and promoting the arts in the College and Swavesey Patch. This can be found on the College’s website.

Other highlights this half term have included:

  • The Sponsored Walk. Nearly 1200 students took part this year, raising money for both a new College minibus and our nominated charities.
  • A visit by the Sri Lankan Government Minister who is responsible for the rebuilding of the 174 schools that were devastated by the tsunami. He met with the School Council, who will now co-ordinated the development of a link between students at SVC and a school in Sri Lanka.
  • The College’s BTec Construction Course has made a very promising start with the year 10 students genuinely appreciating the opportunity that this course provides.
  • There have been numerous trips this term, including a 10 day German Exchange, a Geography trip to the Eden Project and a year 11 History trip to Berlin and Krakov.
  • We were delighted that Dr Mary Archer was able to come and celebrate the academic and personal achievements of our students at our Presentation Evening. Details of all winners can be found on the College website.

Our sport teams have continued to enjoy considerable success:

  • Our boys U13 tennis team narrowly lost in the regional final against Watford Grammar School, following their unbeaten run during the summer term.
  • The girls’ U12 and U13 football team and the boys’ U16 hockey team won their respective district tournaments.
  • We have fielded rugby teams at U12, U14 and U16 for the first time in many years.

Finally, it is difficult to do justice to the many activities taking place within and beyond the classroom at SVC. To keep up with news on a weekly basis, please continue to log on to the ‘Newsdesk’ on the College’s website: http://swaveseyvc.co.uk/
