Kevin Knight

I would like to thank the residents of Swavesey for their sympathy, prayers and offers of assistance following the death of my husband, Kevin, on Oct 7th. All have been gratefully received, and have brought comfort to me and my family.

I know that your awareness of the loss suffered to my family will continue to strengthen us in the weeks and months ahead.

Elizabeth Knight, Boxworth End, Swavesey

XMAS WASTE COLLECTIONS

Over Christmas we’ll dispose of up to 30% more glass bottles and aluminium and steel drink cans than usual.  As part of your Christmas preparations, here are South Cambridgeshire’s waste and recycling arrangements.

Wheeled bin collections
Residents with wheeled bins are being given a weekly black wheeled bin collection service throughout the Christmas period. This increased collection should give residents enough room for all their additional waste.

Green wheeled bin collections will be temporarily suspended as garden waste is virtually nil from mid December to mid January, whereas the volumes of glass, cans and residual waste peaks during the first and second weeks after Christmas and New Year

Green box collections
Everyone will receive the current green box collection service, apart from collections normally on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 December (bank holidays). Additional resources will be provided on 9 and 10 January to collect additional glass cans and paper.

Please take any excess or side waste can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Milton and Thriplow.

Householders should check their collection calendars in South Cambs magazine or on www.scambs.gov.uk

Bin not collected?
Telephone 0840 450 063 by 3:30pm the following day (and 8pm on the scheduled day).

Tips on Recycling

Cardboard
Flatten all cardboard boxes and stack them in the green wheeled bin

Kitchen waste
If residents are unable to home compost, kitchen food waste can be placed in the black wheeled bin to be collected next, for a weekly collection.

Wrapping Paper
The inks and the metallic content of some wrapping papers means they are not suitable for recycling or composting. Our advice is not to recycle or compost Christmas wrapping paper – please put it in the black bin.

Plastic
There are twenty plastics banks throughout the district able to collect plastic with the 1, 2 or 3 logos. Rinse, flatten, place bottles in the plastic recycling banks and lids in the black wheeled bin.

Tins, cans and foil
Rinse and crush cans and put them in the green box. If you can’t re-use your cooking foil, rinse it and place it in the green box

Glass bottles
Rinse and put them in the green box.

Christmas trees
Chop up your tree and place in the green bin, providing the branches/trunk are not more than 3 inches thick. Alternatively, take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Christmas cards
Put them in your green wheeled bin for composting.

Textiles
Place in textile recycling banks or donate to charity shops.

Ringing over Christmas and New Year

As well as the regular Sunday service ringing and practice nights, the bell ringers are very busy over the Christmas season.

You will be able to hear the bells on the following occasions:

Christmas Eve:

Ringing for the Midnight Mass.

Christmas Day:

Ringing for the Christmas Communion.

New Year’s Eve:

Ringing the old year out and the new year in followed by prayers for the new year.

New Year’s Day:

Ringing for Sunday morning service.

 Arts Development Update

It’s been a busy and exciting first few months in post.  On October 17th, around 50 people attended the Community Arts Launch evening at the college.  Musical performances from St. Cecilia 14 and the brand new gypsy/swing band and excerpts from the Theatre Company’s production of Missing – Dan Nolan hugely impressed all in attendance.  Student pottery work and a stunning photographic display from the Swavesey Camera Club further set the scene.  The evening also marked the launch of Arts News, a community arts newsletter for villages in the college catchment area, from Bar Hill to Over to Papworth.  Copies of the newsletter can be found in various venues across the patch as well as on the college and village websites.

You will have read in the last issue about the Orchestra in a Village project happening in November 2006.  I will be chairing a festival support committee of volunteers to meet monthly from January ’06.  If you are at all interested in contributing to the development of this project, offering your ideas or getting involved in whatever capacity you can, please do not hesitate to get in touch.  Furthermore if you have any questions or comments about the arts in Swavesey, please do ring me at the college, 234476, or email, gillian.hunter@swaveseyvc.cambs.sch.uk.
