Second Anniversary
Meeting
Our second Anniversary Meeting was
held on Wednesday 12 October 2005 at the library
in Swavesey Village College. Here Richard Hart our Chairperson
thanked everyone for taking the time to attend this
meeting, he then went on to give a detailed report on
the progress of Your Library over the second year of
operation and outline the review of services being undertaken,
(we hope to report on this in the next issue of the
Meridian). In addition were heard short reports from
the treasurer, secretary and volunteers organizer. Following
this all existing committee members were returned for
the forthcoming year.
Remember, if we don't have that favorite
book or author in stock then we will certainly be able
to order it for you from one of the other Cambridgeshire
Libraries, (children and non fiction requests are free,
adult fiction only 60p)
A very big thanks must go out to
everyone, the Admin committee, Volunteers, SVC and the
users of Your Library, for all their hard work in making
this village facility a success.
Once the official proceedings were
over, Jenny Knight, a freelance copy editor, gave us
a very informative and interesting talk about her work,
which can involve writing missing text, rewriting the
incomprehensible, tidying up for the pernickety and
restructuring text for the disorganized. Her knowledge
of the English language was mind blowing and she certainly
put us all to shame in her ten quotes test. I am sure
she would take me to task over my English in this article!
Many thanks Jenny, a most interesting talk.
Congratulations to all those children
who completed the children's reading challenge. "The
Reading Voyage”, they have now received their certificate
and medallion.
One question we are continually asked
is "what sort of books do you stock”? Well the
short answer is, "whatever you want us to stock1'
At the moment we have a great selection
of children's story books, probably in the region of
300 - 400, running from board and picture books for
pre school children to young adult, including animal,
mystery,, magic and fun stories.
For adult, we stock both fiction
and non-fiction, probably in excess of 1500 books.
General fiction includes Crime, Adventure,
Romance, Fantasy, some available in large print Non-fiction
includes a number of interesting biographies, travel
guides, encyclopedias, reference guides and medical
dictionaries.
In addition to all the above, we
have a wide range of local history books containing
some fascinating facts and stories about Swavesey and
the surrounding Fens, including a section on the Second
World War. Many of which you will not be able to glean
off the internet!
So as you can see it's well worth
popping in today to see what we have to offer.
In addition to books, we provide
Access
to the Internet on 2 dedicated Internet computers
A
variety of CD ROMS - (children's games & encyclopaedias)
for use on our CD ROM computer
Local
study information files - (just what you need to complete
your homework)
Numerous
leaflets and adverts on local events
Second
hand books for sale
Copies
of local planning issues, (for example, the Northstowe
and South Cambs development plans)
