Swavesey Primary School

Season

It was an extremely busy end of term at Swavesey Primary School. Here we detail some of the many seasonal events which took place.

Both our Christmas performances were very well attended. Well done to all the children who took part so enthusiastically. There are some very talented children throughout the school, and these plays gave many the chance to shine in public. We have been grateful for many kind comments from parents following the productions. We are also very grateful to Mrs Turian and the PTA committee for organising the refreshments for our evening performances. Thank you for your generous donations to TEARFUND after our plays. We collected a grand total of £325.

I hope you saw the superb photographs of some of our performers in the Cambridge Evening News. With three separate photographs published, the News is now officially our favourite local paper. A display of photographs taken during the festive season will be in the school entrance hall.

Our school Christmas lunch was most enjoyable. Mrs Porter and Mrs Williamson worked extremely hard to prepare almost 250 lunches, and the children certainly seemed to appreciate this.

The class parties also ran smoothly. The Year1 and 2 party took the form of a banquet with entertainment laid on by the children in the form of dancing, singing and a Mumming play (lots of cheers, boos and ahs!). The Hall looked terrific and the children enjoyed

a fantastic experience thanks to Brother Philip (Phil Cooke from History off the Page). Our older children definitely made the most of their party games and had a great time.

I have really enjoyed the tremendous support offered by staff, governors and parents during my first term. On behalf of all the school staff I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.

The Pen is Mightier Than The Axe!

Some of our children have written letters regarding the LIBRARY CLOSURE. Here is an example:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in concern of Swavesey Library closing. There are many consequences to this.

The library is a good resource to children when we have projects to complete. It provides us with excellent information. If we don't have the library books we will have gaps in our education, and couldn't learn about different cultures, animals, history etc.

Younger children learn to read in the library. There are a great variety of books to choose from. It would be a shame if the library closed now it's become so efficient.

Many older people and adults with lack of transport like to read. How would they reach another library? There's still the bus service but they might not be able to cover the costs.

The library is a great help to people who do not have a computer at home. Since the library has expanded the computer facilities have improved a lot. Many people use the library on a regular basis. Closing it would cause an upset in our community. I will be highly upset as it is one of my favourite places in the village.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Dickman (age 11)

Our Blue Peter Bring and Buy Sale

We decided to raise money for the Blue Peter Waterworks Appeal. This is to help people in Tanzania and Uganda get fresh, clean water in their home villages. They need money to get pumps, water pipes, cement and even bicycles.

We wrote to Blue Peter in November and they sent us a pack to help us to organise the sale. We appealed to all classes in school to bring things in to sell. Our sale took place on two afternoons after school. There were lots of things left over and so we extended the sale to another afternoon. We organised stalls selling books, toys, cakes, games and Santa made a surprise guest appearance on two afternoons.

We would like to thank everyone who brought in things to sell, including relatives who helped us to bake cakes for the sale on Monday afternoon. And, of course, many thanks to people who spent money at each of the stalls.

We enjoyed organising this event, together with a lot of other Year 6 students.

Altogether we raised a grand total of £95 from the three sales. We hope that the money will be put to good use on a water project.
