 SWAVESEY & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY

TUESDAY 21st OCTOBER 2003 AT S.V.C
Mr. Bill Wittering gave an excellent and interesting talk on the "Royal Mail". Taking us through the ages from when the early Greeks & Egyptians would send letters onwards to the time of the penny post with delivery by horse and mail coach and then to more recent times with delivery by the mail train. Some amusing anecdotes illustrated with slides made for a very good evening. The speaker was thanked by our vice chairman Mr. Rod Dundee.

TUESDAY 18th NOVEMBER 2003 AT S.V.C
The subject for the talk given by Mr Bob Burn-Murdoch was Oliver Cromwell's Local Links. Starting with a slide of the unveiling of Cromwell's statue in St. Ives 1901 the speaker explained that although this had originally been intended for Huntingdon where Cromwell was born in 1599,a lack of subscribers to it's fund meant a switch to St.Ives whose people were prepared to give the necessary money. Mr Burn-Murdoch continued to speak about Cromwell's connections with Huntingdon where he attended school and also his connections with St. Ives and Ely. Mrs Carol Shaw thanked him for his excellent and interesting talk.

TUESDAY 9th DECEMBER 2003 AT S.V.C
Dr. Colin Lattimore gave a talk together with slides about the silver of the worshipful company of clockmakers. He explained the role of Livery Companies from the 13th century likening them to early trade unions. They built up a collection of silver as capital. The worshipful company of clockmakers was chartered in the 17th century . The silver amassed from then to the present time was shown on slides with descriptions & anecdotes from Dr. Colin Lattimore. Mrs Carol Shaw thanked the speaker for a splendid talk saying that we were very honoured to have seen such slides. Seasonal refreshments were served followed by a short A.G.M. when the present officers were re-elected. Mrs Carol Shaw thanked everyone who helped to make the Society so successful. Mr John Shepperson endorsed this and made a plea for articles that could be put in a new publication about "Memories". The meeting closed at 9:30pm.

The Community Club would also look to assist with the development of other sports or community activities. If there is anyone who would like any further information or would be willing to help us in this venture please contact Angus Clow - SIFC Development Officer Tel. 07939 260802 or e-mail angus.clow@milton-keynes.gov.uk

 CABIN FEVER

The winter hasn't ended yet, probably there's plenty more to come, but don't make the mistake of holing up until Spring. If you are beginning to suffer from a surfeit of "Best of ..." TV programmes and old sitcoms and movies why not come along to the Camera Club.

We are already halfway through our programme for 2003/04 but newcomers and guests are always welcome.   Maybe you had a new camera for Christmas and are unsure how to get the best from it; you might pick up a lot of useful information from our lectures and from our more experienced members, or maybe you would like an evening out enjoying some wonderful photographs.

Before Christmas we saw some absolutely stunning work, landscapes, macro-photography and brilliant underwater shots of sea-life and wreck-diving. Soon we will be treated to two ¬"home-grown" evenings when we will see Malcolm Clements' first-class slides and Mike Swain's imaginative digital prints.    The later should be of great interest to those who have taken part in Mike's excellent digital photography courses at SVC.

Our programme appears regularly in this magazine so come along any Thursday evening.
