After School Club

The club provides a range of arts, crafts, games & sports for you to enjoy. We have a book corner, chess club, competition club, computer & Nintendo. There are also opportunities to play tennis & football.

Every Friday it's 'eat as much as you like' time until all the perishables have been eaten! From baked beans to tuna sandwiches, the choice is yours. But be warned ... after all this food you may not need to go home to tea.

We have spaces to fill so if your child(ren) would like to try your hand at any of the above, parents or carers can call Tracy-Jane Newton (07710 710291) to book.

Books! Books! Books!

We are always looking for new books to supplement our well used classroom selection of fiction and non-fiction books.

We have been grateful to a few parents who have donated a number of books, when their children have finished reading. Should you need a little extra space on your bookshelves we would welcome any suitable books in good condition. Paperback fiction such as Puffins, non-fiction and picture or story books for younger readers are particularly useful. If you can help us out please bring any books to me. THANKS!

On The Road To SAFETY

We are looking for people to train as cycling Instructors. if you have spare time and would like to be involved in something worthwhile and rewarding, contact us for further details. it would mean a day's training next February, and one week instructing Year 6 pupils on the road later in the summer term.

Please contact Mrs. Roberts if you can help us out.

  Our New Building Project

Following recent meetings between governors  and Cambridgeshire LEA we are now ready to initiate our extension building project. We want to have a new room built on the area containing  large shrubs near Mr. Dodge and Mrs. Roberts’ classrooms. This will be used as a LIBRARY, with shelving mostly around the outside of the room to permit whole class groups to use the facility. It will also be used as a MUSIC ROOM at different times during the week. This new space would also enable our ICT suite to be used for computer-based learning more frequently.

We are working with Peter Smith Associates, who have very good experience with similar building projects in local schools, to proceed with the extension. Ideally, we would like work to commence at the start of the summer vacation  in 2004 to enable foundations to be completed with the children off-site.

We Are The Champions My Friend

Last Monday 8th December we took part in an Under 11 six a side football competition organised by the Cambridge Utd, Football In The Community team. This was held on the large astroturf pitch at Coldhams Common in Cambridge.

There were 10 teams present, with two leagues. The games were ten minutes with no half-time. In our first match we had a bye because Whittlesford did not turn up, so we won 2-0. Next we played Foxton, winning 5-0 with Alex scoring three, Andrew and Jack R. one each. We won 4-0 against Abbey-Meadows A. in the next game against Great Shelford we went a goal down, but we still won 4-1. The same thing happened In the last group game against Duxford B team, we won 6-1 this time. So we topped the group and qualified for the semi-finals.

In the semi-final we beat Duxford A by 2-0. The final was played over two halves, seven minutes each way St Phillips Primary from Cambridge were our opponents. We won 4-0 with Alex scoring twice, Andrew and Liam once.

We are now the Cambridgeshire Primary Schools Under 11 Champions. This is part of a national competition, the Kellogg's Frosties Cup. We will represent Cambridge Utd. F.C. in the next stage of the competition to be played sometime next term.

Our team was Paul Tlpfady; Liam O'Neill; Andrew Fox; Jack Rushton; Alex Russell and Scott Davis, with Jack Langley and Robert Ellington as substitutes.

Competition Winners

There were 82 entries for the Parish Council's Play Area Committee Competition. The committee were impressed by many of the  ideas that our children came up with, and hope to use some of them, Mrs. Nuttall was asked to judge the winning entries, and prizes were presented in assembly last Friday.

5s & Under Winner: Natasha Barton
Key Stage 1 Winner: James Ives
Key Stage 2 Winner. Joshua Bauid

There were also three runners up in each year group

WELL DONE to ALL entrants for taking part in helping to design a new play area for Swavesey. We look forward to seeing it in action sometime in 2004 or 2005.

We have a bit of catching up to do in this report – namely our Pre-school Bazaar way back in November. Instead of snow we had rain, all day, but Father Christmas was happy in his grotto chatting to the children, and all the work of the committee, parents and staff paid off as we raised a very healthy £700.  Thank you to the many local families and businesses who supported us so generously.

We had more fun during our Christmas celebrations, with a nativity performance by the children, followed by a Christmas party.  And we are just about to start back with the spring term (according to the school calendar there is no winter term!).  We are very pleased to welcome two new members of staff, Liz and Karen, and trust they will find a happy and rewarding career with us.

During January and February we will have been doing a lot of artwork and activities in relation to our Wintertime topic.  We have also celebrated the Chinese Year of the Monkey with Chinese food tasting and artwork.  Monkeys are fun loving, cheerful and always the centre of attention!

If you would like to visit, or register your child with us, please give me a ring on (01954 203039).

With best wishes for 2004.
