Swavesey Meridian Feb/Mar 2007

At the time of writing I see that the wind farm appeal has been turned down, a good idea but in the wrong place, renewable energy is a worthwhile thing but alongside one the busiest roads in the country is not the place to put a wind farm! Which leads me to the whole issue of the A14- the road that dominates our lives since it is the main route for most of us to access Cambridge/Huntingdon and other places further afield. Looking at the various options that are being considered I notice the one thing they have in common is a large interchange between the Swavesey turn and Fen Drayton. I hope the noise impact of this will be brought into the equation as I can see that this will lead to an increase in the noise from the road. If the wind is coming from the south or southwest the constant hum of the road is quite noticeable; add to this the possible noise generated by the guided bus and Swavesey becomes a filling in a sandwich with noise coming at us from two directions!

Anyone have an opinion on this? We would like to hear your thoughts.

Deadline for the April/May issue is 20th February, please let us know about those Spring Fairs, Easter activities and other events.  Ed
EDITORIAL
FRONT COVER - ‘Fenland Flood‘ from an acrylic painting by Alison Lucas

This year is the 60th anniversary of the major Swavesey floods of 1947. See page 45 for Stephen Bulls article on this event. Flooding is always a concern for Swavesey and even today there are discussions and arguments about reducing the height of some of the flood defences along Covell’s Drain and the flood protection banks around Fen Drayton Lakes. The Environment agency produce flood prediction maps and there are several houses in Swavesey sited within the predicted flood plain. See:- http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ (Like many organisations, they do not recognise our new post codes so use the old one!!)

CAROLE SHAW
Carole Shaw was one of those people who seemed to be everywhere. She was involved with so many village and community activities, the History Society, Swavesey Primary School, Swavesey Village College, the Library and of course for many years she ran the Pre-school playgroup. There must be many who went to her playgroup (as it was then) who are now parents themselves.

Carole had such energy and enthusiasm and always had time to help, the saying “ask a busy person” was made for her. We will miss her and our thoughts are with her husband and family.
