The History of the Manor House Farm and 'manorial rights' at a glance

Pre - 1066

Prior to the Norman Conquest the 'principle' manor of Swavesey belonged to Edith the Fair Queen of Edward the Confessor
 

c.1066

With the arrival of the Normans the 'favoured' manor was given to Count Alan De La Zouch William the Conqueror's son-in-law
 

1230

A manor in Swavesey was acquired by Roger De La Zouch in exchange for his land in Brittany
 

1232

De La Zouch was granted "fifteen oaks for making a lodging at his 'manor' of Swavesey".
 

1278-79

Elena De La Zouch
described as the "Lady of Manor"
 

16-17th
century

Swavesey manor held by family of Sir John Cutts
During his time the Manor House was much altered
 

1775

Thomas Cockayne (d.1781) purchased the lease of the manor from the late Duke of Bedford He also purchased Manor Farm Thos. Cockayne owned all the manors including the ancient Hobbledods Manor off Market Street
 

1781

Thomas Cockayne was succeeded by his widow Elizabeth

Manor surrendered to their son Thomas Cockayne (d. 1809)
and his wife .......
 

1809

....... and succeeded by their son Thomas Cockayne (d.1852)
 

1851

The tenancy of Manor Farm advertised and taken up by Hanslip & Martha Long
 

1852

The manor passed to daughter of Thomas Cockayne
Marion Charlotte Emily
"Lady Bountiful" Ryder
wife of the hon. F. Dudley Ryder

 

 

1878

On Lady Ryder's death the Family sold the Swavesey estate in lots

The 'manorial rights' were bought by John O. Daintree
recently come to live in the parish on behalf of his parents
Richard & Elizabeth Daintree

The Lordship then passed to
John O. Daintree......

.....who conveyed it in 1900 to
T. F. Fowler

The system of 'manorial rights' was
 discontinued in 1922

At the sale in 1878 the Manor Farm and House and 192 acres to Charles Roberts .....
 

 1879

....... and was sold the next year to Thos. Docksey(d.1892)
 

 1903

The Manor Farm & House belonged to capt. J.A.M. Vipan
 

 1908

His Trustees sold the Manor House & Farm and 159 acres to James Norman one of the tenants
 

 1919

Mr. Frank Norman was living in the Manor House in 1919

 1942

On the death of Elizabeth

(widow of James Norman) in 1942 Manor House and farm sold to Taylors, Solicitors of N'Mkt

During W.W.II the Manor House was requisitioned by the 'War-Ag' for accommodation of 'land girls' engaged in agricultural work for the war effort.

The Manor House and farm were purchased by Dr. Allan & Mrs Ford
 

 1976

The Manor House and farm purchased by Miss Bartholomew
 

 

  The present owner/occupiers are Mr. & Mrs. Bayfield
