This week, as part of the Village College Student Experience Week, many students have been working on community projects around the village. On Tuesday and Wednesday two groups were around Moat Way pond building bug hotels and a newt hibernaculum. Moat Way pond has one of the largest colonies of Gt Crested Newts in the village.Using broken bricks, terracotta pots and pipes, straw, logs, cones, pallets and many other materials, the students constructed two large bug hotels and an area for the newts to over-winter.
Students sawed up and drilled holes into logs, filled up pallets with all manner of materials and hopefully enjoyed two days in the outdoors rather than the classroom as well.
Later this year the hibernaculum will be covered with turf and sedums planted on the bug hotels.
Many thanks to the Village College for the students time in helping with this project and to Hannah and Helen Parish for supervising the two days.
