Work and Role of the
Parish Council

The primary role of the Parish Council is to represent its parishioners on issues affecting the community, to District, County and Central Government.

In addition, Swavesey Parish Council carries out the following work within the parish:

• Maintenance of public open spaces at:
         • The Recreation Green, including School Pond
         • Market Street Green
         • Swan Pond
         • Carters Way/Priory Avenue
         • Moat Way, including the Pond
         • Constable’s Rood

• On behalf of and in conjunction with the County Council:
         • Grasscutting of highway verges within the village boundary
         • Maintenance of rights of way, as a member of the Parish Paths
           Partnership Scheme

• Provides and maintains the following services:
         • Children’s play area on the recreation green
         • Children’s play area on Moat Way green

• Provides and maintains bus shelters, seats, plants tubs and parish noticeboards
   at various locations in the village.

• In conjunction with South Cambridgeshire District Council maintains dog waste bins and
   litter bins at various locations in the village.

• Consultee on local development plan issues from both the County and District Councils.

• Comments on (but not decides) planning applications.

• Nominates representatives on the following village bodies*:
         • Swavesey Fire Relief Charity  (Frere Cottages)
         • The Thomas Galon Charity
         • The Charity for George Long at Swavesey Memorial Hall
         • The Swavesey Byways Committee
         • Meridian Magazine Committee
         • Swavesey Festival Steering Group
         • Swavesey Community Pavilion Ltd
         • Swavesey Action for Youth Committee
         • Parish Plan Action Group

• Supports the work of charitable groups and organisations within the village.

The Parish Council employs two members of staff:  The Clerk and The Village Handyman

 

 *  Following a change in the Guide to the Law of School Governing Bodies, there is no longer a requirement for Parish Councils to nominate a representative Governor to Primary School Governing Bodies.  This Governor position has now been replaced by a Community Governor.
