Successful Projects

Summer Fun Activities - August 2011
Two free of charge contemporary dance workshops were held in Swavesey Memorial Hall.  In total 22 young people attended and enjoyed a full day of dance, putting together a short routine.

Four sports fun days were held on the Recreation Green during the summer holidays.  From 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.  Sports activities included volley ball, softball, quick stix hockey and TAG rugby.  These events were free of charge and enjoyed by many local young people.

Recycled Fashion Show - June 2010
A 'recycled' fashion show was staged during the Swavesey Festival 2010. Organised in association with Swavesey Action for Youth and funded by a Cambridgeshire Community Foundation Grassroots Grant, young people from Swavesey designed, made and modelled clothes and accessories using recycled materials and second-hand clothes.

Drama Workshop - April 2010
As part of the Swavesey Festival 2010, in association with Mrs April Martin, Swavesey Action for Youth funded a second very successful youth drama workshop at Swavesey Village College.  Led by Diccon Hogger of basedance Company, the students put together a drama film based on the Festival theme of "Swavesey Goes Green!" which was shown during the Festival Week.

Drama Workshop - August 2009
In association with Mrs April Martin, Swavesey Action for Youth funded a youth dance/drama workshop at Swavesey Village College.  Led by Diccon Hogger of basedance Company, students put together drama and dance around a script entitled "In Search of the Fen Tiger".  A short film was made of the workshop which was presented during October. Swavesey Action for Youth was very pleased to be able to fund the workshops, which were enthusiastically enjoyed by the young people who took part.

Dance Workshops - February 2009
In association with Mrs April Martin, Swavesey Action for Youth funded two youth dance workshops held in Swavesey Village College.  These were very successfully received with a total of 49 young people attending over the two days.  Led by Diccon Hogger of basedance Company, the students enthusiastically learnt a dance routine which was then performed in front of parents at the end of each day.  With funding from an Awards for All grant, Swavesey Action for Youth were very pleased to be able to fund the workshops, which enabled the young people to attend free of charge.

History

Swavesey Action for Youth

"Giving a voice to young people"

A very positive meeting was held in October 2006 to discuss how a Youth Club on the Village College site could be re-opened and how more activities for young people could be arranged and supported.  Various options from purely voluntary, to partnership working with the Cambridge Youth Service were discussed and further meetings then took place to establish an administrative Steering Committee to move this project forward - Swavesey Action for Youth (SAY).
SAY continues and now supports existing and new youth activities, through Parish Council and grant funding support.
To continue SAY needs volunteers from the village to help manage and run activities. If you think you could spare some time to either help with the steering committee or run future activities then please contact us. Without your help this will not happen.
It will be important to involve young people with this group and to include teenagers on the Steering Committee, so if you know of anyone who would be interested please pass this information on to them.
